HUSTLE FILE #38: Eric Hiss

NAME:  Eric Hiss

OCCUPATION:  Journalist… Travel Writer/Blogger… Marketing Communications Samurai… Teacher… Mixer of Tasty Drinks

LOCATION: Los Angeles and Tom Bradley International Terminal, LAX

WHAT’S YOUR HUSTLE:  Writing about  places you don’t know you want to go to yet. Uncovering global stories that inspire and inform. Capturing video and photos of preposterously cool stuff. Helping companies articulate their story by any means necessary so they can resonate with customers.

WHAT DOES YOUR HUSTLE MEAN TO YOU: The chance to explore the world of which I am endlessly curious. The freedom to say no to irrelevant projects and yes to rewarding ones. The opportunity to create my day, every day. Developing the discipline to meet constant challenges with a sharp mind and open heart. The occasional no-guilt long lunch with a friend.

IF YOU COULD HAVE ONLY THREE TOOLS FOR YOUR HUSTLE, WHAT WOULD THEY BE: MacBookPro, Passport, Shanghai night-market knock-off Wenger bag.

A WORD OF ADVICE TO WANNABE HUSTLERS IN YOUR FIELD:  Flexibility and resourcefulness are key, and don’t underestimate any contact or possibility. Respect the mighty deadline. Don’t be afraid to reach-out to people who might be able to help you. And remember the John Wooden quote:  “It’s what you learn after you know it all that counts.”

Tonight, Eric will teach his Advanced Travel Writing class for mediabistro in Los Angeles. All the details here:
